Measuring Coherent Optical Modulation
Live on: July 27, 2010
10:00 AM PDT | 12:00 PM CDT | 1:00 PM EDT | 6:00 PM BST
In order to increase the capacity of existing fiber optic transmission systems, complex modulation schemes are being developed which maximize the use of the available bandwidth. These modulation schemes use the optical phase in addition to its amplitude to code information allowing for transmission speeds in the hundreds of Gb/s over a single optical wavelength. The most widely used form of coherent optical modulation is known as DP-QPSK (dual polarized quadrature phase shift keying) and has been demonstrated at speeds up to 224 Gb/s. Measuring this type of signal differs significantly from the more traditional methods used for OOK (on off keying) signals. Performance metrics such as extinction ratio and eye mask testing are replaced with constellation diagrams and bit error ratio. In addition, coherent optical signals utilize intradyne modulation which requires an optical local oscillator and digital signal processing to detect and measure. This one hour webinar will discuss optical intradyne transmission and coherent detection along with the key measurements for these systems compared to more traditional OOK systems. Equipment requirements will be discussed and a measurement example will be presented.

Optametra and LeCroy to Showcase Test Solution Capable of 224 Gb/s PM-QPSK at OFC/NFOEC Exposition
March 19, 2010
CHESTNUT RIDGE, NY – LeCroy Corporation, designer of the world’s fastest (30 GHz) real-time oscilloscope, and Optametra, a leading supplier of coherent lightwave signal analyzers, will showcase their combined test solution at the OFC/NFOEC Exposition, Booth 1406, San Diego from March 23 to 25. LeCroy’s WaveMaster 830Zi, a 30 GHz real-time oscilloscope, has already been used to measure 224 Gb/s capability using 56 Gb/s per tributary polarization multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (PM-QPSK) signals. This is a significant step towards accelerating the availability of 200G transmission technology and beyond for ultra long haul Dense Waveform Division Multiplexing (DWDM) networks.
